Biography

Blessed José Gafo Muñiz, born on 20 October 1881 in Tiós, Campomanes, Asturias, Spain, was a Dominican priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was beatified on 28 October 2007 by Pope Benedict XVI.

José Gafo Muñiz grew up in a devout Catholic family and showed a strong inclination towards religious life from an early age. In his youth, he entered the Dominican Order, known for its commitment to preaching and teaching. After completing his studies, he was ordained a priest and dedicated himself to serving the faithful as a diligent and compassionate minister.

During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, which commenced in 1936, religious persecution against Catholic priests and religious was rampant. Father José Gafo Muñiz became a target for his unwavering faith and commitment to the Gospel.

On 4 October 1936, in Madrid, Spain, Father José Gafo Muñiz was brutally murdered for his refusal to renounce his religious beliefs and abandon his priestly duties. He faced his martyrdom with courage and grace, offering his life as a testament to his unwavering faith and dedication to God.

Recognizing his heroic virtues and martyrdom, Pope Benedict XVI, on 26 June 2006, declared Venerable José Gafo Muñiz, signifying his approval of the recognition of his life of holiness. Later, on 28 October 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, bestowing the title of "Blessed" upon him.

Blessed José Gafo Muñiz serves as an example of steadfast faith and unwavering dedication to God, even in the face of persecution and adversity.
