Biography

Blessed José Fuentes Ballesteros, also known as José Fuentes or Pepe Fuentes, was a Catholic priest in the diocese of Almeria, Spain. He was born on 13 May 1885 in Mojácar, a town located in the province of Almeria.

Ordained to the priesthood, Blessed José dedicated his life to serving God and his community. He faithfully carried out his pastoral duties, ministering to the faithful in Almeria, offering the sacraments, and preaching the Gospel.

Tragically, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Blessed José Fuentes Ballesteros became a victim of religious persecution. On 2 October 1936, he was martyred for his unwavering faith in El Portazgo, Los Gallardos, Almeria, Spain.

Blessed José's courageous martyrdom earned him the recognition of the Church. On 14 June 2016, Pope Francis declared him venerable, acknowledging his heroic virtues. Later, on 25 March 2017, Pope Francis further honored him by beatifying him in a special ceremony held at the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce in Almería, Spain. The beatification was presided by Cardinal Angelo Amato, representing the Pope.

As a blessed martyr, José Fuentes Ballesteros is remembered for his steadfast faith and his ultimate sacrifice in the defense of his religious convictions.
