Biography

Blessed José Flores Beltrán, also known as José Beltrán Flores, was born in Mojacar, Almeria, Spain. He was ordained a priest in the diocese of Almería in December 1899. After his ordination, he dedicated himself to serving the faithful in the parish of Cuevas de Almanzora for over 30 years.

Father Beltrán was known for his deep faith, compassion, and dedicated pastoral care. He worked tirelessly to bring the love of Christ to the people entrusted to his care, offering spiritual guidance, celebrating the sacraments, and supporting the community in times of both joy and sorrow.

Sadly, during the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, Father Beltrán faced persecution for his faith. On 30 August 1936, in the town of La Ballabona, Antas, Almeria, he became a martyr for refusing to renounce his Catholic beliefs. His steadfast devotion to the teachings of the Church and his refusal to abandon his flock, even in the face of great danger, embodied his deep commitment to Christ.

His martyrdom and exemplary life were recognized by the Catholic Church, and on 14 June 2016, Pope Francis declared him venerable, acknowledging his heroic virtues. On 25 March 2017, during a solemn ceremony held in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce in Almería, Spain, Father Beltrán was beatified by Pope Francis. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.

As a blessed and martyr of the Church, Blessed José Flores Beltrán serves as an inspiration and intercessor for all who seek his help. His feast day is celebrated on 30 August, the day of his martyrdom, and his beatification serves as a reminder of the sacrifice he made in defense of his faith and the Christian values he lived by.
