Blessed José Elcano Liberal, also known as José Liberal Elcano, was a member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by Saint Anthony Mary Claret. He was born on 31 March 1914 in the town of Oláriz, located in the Navarra region of Spain.
José Elcano Liberal professed his religious vows on 15 August 1931, committing himself to a life of service to God and his fellow human beings. Tragically, his life was cut short during the Spanish Civil War, a period of intense conflict and persecution in Spain. He was martyred for his faith on 26 July 1936, when he was shot in Lleida, a city in northeastern Spain.
As one of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs, Blessed José Elcano Liberal is honored and remembered on two feast days. His primary feast day is on 26 July, the day of his martyrdom. Additionally, he is also commemorated on 1 February together with the other Spanish Claretian Martyrs.
In recognition of his heroic virtue and sacrifice, Pope Francis proclaimed José Elcano Liberal as venerable on 21 December 2016. This decree confirmed that he had lived a life of exemplary holiness and devotion to God. Further, on 21 October 2017, Pope Francis proceeded to beatify José Elcano Liberal at a ceremony held in the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato, who represented the Holy Father.
José Elcano Liberal's beatification serves as a testament to his sanctity and the impact of his life, now officially recognized by the Catholic Church. His example of faithfulness and courage in the face of persecution continues to inspire and guide those who look to him as a model of Christian discipleship.
