Biography

Blessed José Castro Díaz, also known as Father José Castro Díaz, was a devoted priest of the diocese of Córdoba, Spain. He was born on February 8, 1888, in Villanueva de Córdoba, a town located in the province of Córdoba. From an early age, José demonstrated a deep faith and a passion for serving others.

After completing his initial formation, Father José Castro Díaz was ordained a Catholic priest and began his ministry in the Fuente Obejuna community. He dedicated himself tirelessly to the spiritual and pastoral care of the faithful in this region. His gentle and compassionate nature endeared him to the local community, as he tirelessly ministered to their spiritual needs.

Unfortunately, these were tumultuous times in Spain, marked by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. Amidst the chaos and violence that engulfed the country, Father José Castro Díaz never wavered in his commitment to his faith and his flock. He continued to celebrate Mass, administer the sacraments, and provide guidance and solace to those who sought his help.

Tragically, while carrying out his priestly duties, Father José Castro Díaz became a victim of the religious persecution that was rampant during the Spanish Civil War. On September 21, 1936, he was martyred in Granja de Torrehermosa, a municipality in the province of Badajoz, Spain. He courageously stood firm in his commitment to Christ and the Church, refusing to renounce his faith in the face of extreme adversity.

Blessed José Castro Díaz's exemplary life and martyrdom were officially recognized by the Catholic Church on November 23, 2020, when Pope Francis declared him venerable, acknowledging his heroic virtue. This declaration was followed by his beatification on October 16, 2021, also conducted by Pope Francis, during a special ceremony held at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain. The beatification recognition was presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, emphasizing the significance of Father José Castro Díaz's life and sacrifice.

Blessed José Castro Díaz stands as a testament to unwavering faith and dedication to the service of God's people. His life and martyrdom serve as an example for all Catholics, inspiring them to remain steadfast in their beliefs, even in the face of adversity. He is remembered and venerated on his feast day, September 21st, each year.
