Blessed José Casellesmoncho, also known as José Caselles Moncho, was born on August 8, 1907, in Benidoleig, Alicante, Spain. He studied at the Salesian College in Valencia, where his passion for education and service to others began to flourish.
Inspired by the Salesian charism, Blessed José joined the Salesians and made his religious profession in 1927. He dedicated himself to teaching and served as a beloved teacher in Sarria, Spain. His dedication to educating young minds was evident in his tireless efforts to nurture the intellectual and spiritual growth of his students.
In 1936, after completing his theological studies, José was ordained as a priest in the diocese of Valencia. He was then appointed as a parish priest in Tibidabo, Spain, where he continued his ministry of spreading the Gospel and caring for souls.
During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, when anti-Christian sentiments were rampant, Blessed José fearlessly stood up against the persecution of the Catholic faith. He realized the need to protect the vulnerable young boys from the horrors of war and established a shelter to keep them safe from the fighting.
Jose's commitment to providing a haven for these boys demonstrated his immense love for humanity and his unwavering dedication to their welfare. He believed that every child deserved a chance at life, away from the violence and chaos that surrounded them.
However, Blessed José's valiant efforts to protect these innocent lives did not go unnoticed by the authorities opposing the Catholic Church. He was soon arrested, subjected to brutal tortures, and imprisoned for his loyalty to Christ and his refusal to renounce his faith.
On July 27, 1936, in Barcelona, Spain, Blessed José Casellesmoncho courageously faced martyrdom for his unwavering commitment to his Christian principles. He remained steadfast in his conviction, even in the face of severe persecution.
Recognizing his heroic virtues, Pope John Paul II declared José Casellesmoncho a martyr, venerated on December 20, 1999. The Holy Father beatified him on March 11, 2001, placing him among the Martyred Salesians of Valencia, Catalunya, and Aragón.
Blessed José Casellesmoncho's life serves as an inspiration to all believers, emphasizing the importance of standing firm in the face of adversity and remaining faithful to the teachings of Jesus Christ. His selfless dedication to the youth and his ultimate sacrifice demonstrate the true meaning of Christian love and martyrdom.
