Blessed José Boher Y Foix, also known as Father José Boher Y Foix, was born on 2 November 1887 in Sant Salvador de Toló, Pallars JussÖ, Lleida, Spain. He was the son of Mattia Boher and Benvenuta Foix.
José Boher Y Foix dedicated his life to God and entered the seminary of the diocese of Urgel, Spain, where he pursued his studies in theology and spirituality. After completing his formation, he was ordained a priest on 11 April 1914. As a young priest, Father José served as a coadjutor in various parishes, assisting in pastoral duties and ministering to the spiritual needs of the faithful.
In 1929, Father José was appointed as the parish priest of Pobleta di Belvehí. He fervently carried out his duties, offering the sacraments, providing spiritual guidance, and tending to the pastoral needs of the community entrusted to his care.
Tragically, during the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, Father José Boher Y Foix became a victim of religious persecution. On 13 August 1936, he was unjustly arrested and subsequently shot at the gate of the cemetery in SalÖs de Pallars, Pallars JussÖ, Lleida, Spain. He valiantly bore witness to his faith, meeting his end as a martyr for the Catholic Church.
Father José Boher Y Foix's exemplary life of faith and his martyrdom were recognized and celebrated by the Catholic Church. Pope John Paul II declared him venerable on 19 April 2004, acknowledging his heroic virtues and the sanctity of his life. Further, on 29 October 2005, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, elevating him to the rank of blessed. The beatification ceremony was held at Saint Peter‚Äôs Basilica in Rome, Italy, and was presided over by Cardinal Saraiva Martins.
Today, Blessed José Boher Y Foix serves as an inspiring example of steadfast faith and devotion to God. His feast day is celebrated on 13 August, the day of his martyrdom. Though his representation is not specifically mentioned, we can honor his memory by reflecting on his life of faith and seeking his intercession in our own spiritual journeys.
