Blessed José Bleda Grau, also known as Brother Berardo of Lugar Nuevo de Fenollet, was a Franciscan Capuchin friar who dedicated his life to serving the religious community in Orihuela, Alicante, Spain. He was born on July 23, 1867, in Lugar Nuevo de Fenollet, Valencia, Spain.
Inspired by his deep faith and desire to serve God, José Bleda Grau joined the Capuchin Order and made his religious profession on February 2, 1901. He embraced a life of poverty and humility, which led him to take up the roles of a beggar and tailor for his community. Through his selfless actions, he developed a close relationship with the people of Orihuela, gaining their respect and admiration.
However, during the anti-Catholic persecutions of the Spanish Civil War, Brother Berardo faced immense danger and persecution due to his religious vocation. In order to protect himself, he sought refuge in his home village and hid with his family.
Tragically, Brother Berardo's hiding place was discovered by the militia on the night of August 30, 1936. For five days, he endured physical abuse at their hands. Despite the ordeal, his unwavering faith and commitment to his beliefs remained steadfast. On September 4, 1936, he was ultimately killed when he was shot in the head near Puerto de Benigamin, Valencia, Spain, becoming a martyr for his faith.
Blessed José Bleda Grau's life serves as an example of humility, piety, and charity. His dedication to his religious community and love for his fellow human beings established a profound connection with the people he served. His unwavering faith even in the face of persecution allows him to be remembered as a true martyr for the Catholic faith.
Recognizing his exemplary life and martyrdom, Pope John Paul II venerated Brother Berardo on December 20, 1999, with the decree of martyrdom. On March 11, 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified him, honoring him as Blessed José Bleda Grau. His feast day is celebrated on September 4th, allowing the faithful to remember and seek inspiration from his life and sacrifice.
