Blessed José Almunia Lópezteruel, also known as José Almunia Lópezteruel, was born on 18 March 1870 in Tíjola, Almeria, Spain. He was the brother of Blessed Alfredo Almunia López-Teruel.
José dedicated his life to the service of God and the Church. After completing his studies at the seminary of San Indalecio de Almería, he was ordained a priest in the diocese of Almería on 23 June 1893. Known for his devotion and deep faith, José served as a parish priest and became a fervent supporter of the group Daughters of Mary.
Seeking to deepen his knowledge and understanding of theology, José pursued further studies and earned a doctorate in theology in 1894. He later expanded his academic pursuits and obtained a degree in canon law in 1906, followed by a degree in civil law in 1909. With his extensive educational background, José also took up the role of a teacher, imparting his wisdom and knowledge to others.
During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, José's unwavering faith and commitment to his beliefs led him to face persecution for his religious convictions. This ultimately culminated in his martyrdom. On 29 August 1936, José was brutally shot 30 times in El Abriojal, Rioja, Almeria, Spain.
Witnessing to his faith through his tragic death, José's sacrifice exemplified his unwavering devotion and loyalty to God. His dedication and commitment to his priestly duties, along with his academic pursuits, made him a distinguished figure in the Catholic Church.
The heroic virtues and martyrdom of Blessed José Almunia Lópezteruel were officially recognized by Pope Francis on 14 June 2016, who declared him venerable. Subsequently, on 25 March 2017, Pope Francis beatified him in a solemn ceremony held in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce, Almería, Spain. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, further acknowledging the sanctity and significance of José's life and sacrifice.

His life and martyrdom continue to serve as an inspiration to believers, encouraging them to persevere in their faith and live fully committed to their calling in service to God and others.
