Blessed José Acosta Alemán, also known as José Alemán Acosta, was a Vincentian priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 27 May 1880 in Cartagena, Murcia, Spain.
José Acosta Alemán dedicated himself to the service of God and his fellow human beings as a priest. He entered the Congregation of the Mission, commonly known as the Vincentians, and was ordained to the priesthood. Throughout his life, he was known for his devotion to the Gospel and his commitment to the teachings of the Catholic Church.
Tragically, during the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, José Acosta Alemán became a victim of religious persecution. He was arrested for his faith and ultimately martyred on 31 January 1937 in Totana, Murcia, Spain. Despite the dangers he faced, he remained steadfast in his beliefs and refused to renounce his Catholic faith even when confronted with death.
José Acosta Alemán's heroic actions and sacrifice were recognized by the Catholic Church, and he was venerated on 1 December 2016 by Pope Francis with a decree of martyrdom. His beatification took place on 11 November 2017 in the Palacio Vistalegre Arena, Carabanchel, Madrid, Spain.
The beatification ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato and Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra of Madrid. It was a moment of great celebration for the Catholic community as they honored the life and martyrdom of Blessed José Acosta Alemán.
Today, Blessed José Acosta Alemán serves as a shining example of faith, courage, and dedication to God. His life and martyrdom continue to inspire and encourage believers to stand firm in their convictions, even in the face of persecution.
