Blessed Jordi Sampé Tarragó, also known as Father Doroteu of Villalba dels Arcs, was a Franciscan Capuchin friar who dedicated his life to serving God and his fellow human beings. He was born on 14th January 1908 in Villalba dels Arcs, a small town in Tarragona, Spain.
From a young age, it was clear that Jordi had a deep calling to the religious life. He joined the Capuchin Order and made his profession on 27th January 1929, committing himself to the ideals of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Recognizing his potential as a spiritual leader, Jordi was ordained a priest on 26th March 1932, taking on the mission of spreading the love and teachings of Jesus Christ.
Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, Father Doroteu fell victim to anti-Catholic sentiments and the violence perpetrated by Marxists. He was martyred on 19th December 1936 and buried in the cemetery in Montcada i Reixac, Barcelona, Spain. Despite the untimely end to his earthly life, his steadfast faith and dedication to his vocation inspired many.
Father Doroteu's exemplary life of service and sacrifice did not go unnoticed. His virtuous life and martyrdom were officially recognized by the Catholic Church, and on 5th June 2015, Pope Francis decreed his martyrdom. This acknowledgment was soon followed by his beatification on 21st November 2015, a momentous occasion presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato at the cathedral of Santa Creu i Santa EulÖlia in Barcelona, Spain.
