Biography

Blessed John The Spaniard, also known as John of Spain, was born in 1123 in Almanza, Spain. As a young boy, he migrated to France and settled in Arles. It was in Arles that John began his studies, seeking to deepen his knowledge and understanding of faith.

With a strong desire for a life of solitude and contemplation, John eventually embraced the calling to become a Carthusian monk. He entered the monastery of Montreuil, located in France, where he embarked on a life of intense prayer and asceticism.

John's dedication and piety did not go unnoticed, and he was transferred to the Grande Chartreuse under the guidance of Saint Anthelm of Belley, who recognized his spiritual potential. The Grande Chartreuse, located in the French Alps, was the head monastery of the Carthusian order.

After years of faithful service and spiritual growth, John was entrusted with a mission to found a new charterhouse near Lake Geneva in Switzerland. He became the founder and first prior of the charterhouse of Reposoir. This new monastery, under John's leadership, flourished as a center of prayer and monastic discipline.

In addition to his significant contribution to the male branch of the Carthusian order, John had a remarkable impact on the establishment of the Carthusian nuns. He drew up the first constitutions for these women, providing them with a framework to live their monastic lives in accordance with the principles of the order.

Throughout his life, Blessed John The Spaniard displayed a deep devotion to God and an unwavering commitment to the principles of the Carthusian order. He dedicated his days to solitary prayer, study, and manual labor, seeking union with God through contemplative living.

On June 25, 1160, at the Reposoir chapterhouse in Switzerland, Blessed John passed away peacefully, succumbing to natural causes. His death marked the end of a life well-lived, filled with unceasing contemplation and a desire to draw closer to God.

In recognition of his saintly virtues and his contribution to the Carthusian order, Blessed John The Spaniard was beatified by Pope Pius IX in 1864. Since then, his memory and teachings continue to inspire and uplift those who seek a life of deep prayer and contemplation. His feast day is celebrated on June 25 each year, honoring his legacy and the spiritual heights he achieved in his earthly life.
