Little is known about his early life, but at the age of 20, he joined the Franciscan Order in Recanati, Italy, in approximately 1213.
After his ordination to the priesthood, Blessed John embarked on a fruitful mission in Provence, France, where he established several Franciscan houses during a 25-year apostolate. His tireless efforts in preaching and spreading the Gospel marked him as a true evangelizer of his time. His dedication to serving others and his unwavering commitment to the Franciscan ideals gained him the admiration and respect of both his fellow Franciscans and the local communities.
In 1242, Blessed John returned to his homeland, Italy, and spent the majority of his remaining 30 years in cloistered retirement. This period was characterized by profound spiritual experiences, yet it was not without its challenges. John underwent extended periods of spiritual aridity and doubt, where he felt distant from the grace of God. However, these moments of desolation were counterbalanced by periods of extraordinary mystical episodes and union with the divine. He was known to have received ecstasies, visions, and even the gift of prophecy.
His profound devotion to God and his Franciscan vocation made him both a sought-after spiritual advisor and a beacon of hope for those in need. Blessed John's reputation for holiness and his mystical experiences attracted many people, seeking his counsel, throughout his life. People turned to him for guidance in their spiritual journey and found solace in his compassionate understanding. His life exemplified the Franciscan charism of poverty, humility, and simplicity, and it inspired others to embrace a life of radical discipleship.
On the 3rd of April, 1271, Blessed John of Penna passed away in Recanati, Italy, leaving behind an enduring legacy of faith and devotion. His feast day is commemorated on both the 3rd of April and the 31st of October within the Franciscan tradition. Recognizing his outstanding sanctity, Pope Pius VII beatified him on the 20th of December 1806, formally confirming the cultus or public veneration of Blessed John.
Today, the life of Blessed John of Penna continues to inspire countless individuals to embrace a life dedicated to God, to seek spiritual transformation even in the midst of struggles, and to nurture a deep relationship with Christ.
