Biography

Blessed John of Alvernia, also known as John of Alverna, John of Fermo, and John of La Verna, was born in 1259 in Fermo, located in the Marches of Ancona, Italy. At the age of 13, he joined the Franciscan Friars Minor in the year 1272, demonstrating a deep devotion and commitment to the teachings of the Church.

John of Alvernia immersed himself in a life dedicated to both prayer and active ministry. He spent his time as a part-time hermit and evangelist, traveling throughout the central and northern regions of Italy. His spiritual wisdom and ability to guide others in their faith quickly became evident, making him a sought-after spiritual advisor.

Throughout his life, John of Alvernia was blessed with extraordinary spiritual gifts. He possessed infused knowledge, which allowed him to understand divine truths and religious mysteries with great clarity. Additionally, he experienced profound visions and ecstasies, enabling him to have direct encounters with the divine. His ability to read the thoughts and hearts of others, known as mind-reading, further contributed to his reputation as a holy and saintly man.

John of Alvernia dedicated much of his time to the area around Mount Alvernia, where he resided. This mountain held great significance for him, as it was the same location where Saint Francis of Assisi received the stigmata. Inspired by this connection, John sought to emulate the love of Christ through his selfless actions and teachings.

Blessed John of Alvernia's influence reached far beyond the confines of his local community. People from all walks of life sought his counsel and guidance, finding solace in his deep spirituality and compassionate nature. His reputation as a holy man continued to grow, and he became widely recognized for his sanctity.

John of Alvernia passed away on August 10, 1322, at La Verna, located in Tuscany, Italy. He died a natural death, but his legacy and impact on the spiritual lives of those he touched endured long after his passing.

In recognition of his exceptional holiness and devotion to God, Blessed John of Alvernia was beatified on an unspecified date in 1880 by Pope Leo XIII. His beatification confirmed the cultus, or public veneration, of his life and example within the Catholic Church.

Today, Blessed John of Alvernia is remembered and honored on his feast day, which is celebrated on August 9th. His life serves as an inspiration to all, encouraging us to deepen our faith and seek a greater union with God through prayer, contemplation, and selfless service to others.
