Biography

Blessed John Discalceat, also known as John Descalzo, John Discalceatus, or Giovanni, was born around 1278 in Saint-Vougay, Finistère, in the diocese of Saint Paul-de-Lon, Brittany, France. Little is known about his early life, except that he worked as a stone mason before dedicating himself to a religious vocation.

John joined the Franciscan Order and embraced a life of poverty and simplicity. He was ordained a priest and eventually became the Pastor of Saint Gregoire in Rennes, France. Known for his deep spirituality and devotion to serving others, John carried out his pastoral duties barefooted. This act of humility and self-denial aimed to emulate the poverty and sacrifice of Christ.

One of John's distinctive ministries was his special care for the sick and the poor. He dedicated himself to serving those suffering from illness, providing comfort, care, and spiritual guidance. His compassionate heart was a source of solace and hope for those in need.

Tragically, during the worldwide outbreak of the Black Death in the 14th century, Blessed John Discalceat fell victim to the devastating plague. He passed away on 15 December 1349 at Saint John's monastery in Quimper, Finistère, Brittany, France. His burial took place at the chapel of San Antonio within his monastery, which eventually became renowned as a place of miraculous healing.

Following his death, reports of remarkable healings, particularly for headaches and other head-related ailments, began to circulate. Many pilgrims flocked to his tomb seeking solace and miraculous cures. These healing miracles earned Blessed John Discalceat a posthumous reputation as a powerful intercessor.

Blessed John Discalceat's impact and sanctity were recognized by the Catholic Church. On 4 April 1989, he was beatified by Pope John Paul II, who confirmed the cultus, a term used to affirm public veneration of a holy person.

Today, the memory of Blessed John Discalceat continues to inspire and uplift the faithful. His example of selfless service, humility, and deep faith reminds us of the transformative power of God's love and the importance of reaching out to those who suffer.
