Blessed John Del Bastone

Biography

Blessed John Del Bastone, also known as Giovanni Bonello Botegoni, John Bottegoni, or John of the Staff, was born around the year 1200 in Paterno, Italy. He hailed from a wealthy farm family and was the youngest of five children of Bonello and Superla Botegoni.

At a young age, John was sent to study in Bologna, Italy. It was during his time there that he developed a sore on his leg, which eventually became severely infected. The infection left him with a permanent disability, causing him to walk with a staff for the remainder of his life. This circumstance led to him being commonly known as "John of the Staff" or "John of the Club."

Motivated by a deep sense of devotion and a desire to serve God, John entered the Benedictine monastery around the year 1230. For sixty years, he lived in a small cell and wore the traditional cowl of the Benedictine monks. During this time, John became a spiritual student of Saint Silvester Gozzolini at Monte Fano, Italy.

Although John was ordained late in life, his wisdom and holiness made him a sought-after spiritual teacher, especially among his fellow monks. His knowledge of the spiritual realm and his ability to guide others in their religious journey made him renowned as a spiritual mentor.

Blessed John Del Bastone dedicated his life to prayer, contemplation, and offering spiritual guidance to those seeking his counsel. His humble and devout nature earned him the respect and admiration of his fellow monks and the wider Christian community.

Blessed John passed away on 24 March 1290 at the hermitage of Monte Fano, Italy, due to natural causes. He was interred in the church of Saint Benedict in Fabriano, Italy, which became a place of pilgrimage for those seeking his intercession and guidance.

The only known church dedicated to Blessed John Del Bastone is located in Talangama, Sri Lanka. This church stands as a testament to the impact and veneration John continues to receive, even in a distant land.

Although Beatification status is not provided, the life and virtues of Blessed John Del Bastone undoubtedly make him a worthy candidate for such recognition. His unwavering faith, dedication, and selflessness continue to inspire countless individuals seeking a deeper connection with God.
