Biography

Blessed Joaquim Gelada Hugas, also known as Blessed Joaquim Gelada Hugas, was a member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by Saint Anthony Mary Claret. He was born on 4 December 1881 in Olot, Girona, Spain.

Joaquim Gelada Hugas entered the Congregation of the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, commonly known as the Claretians, and professed his final vows on 11 September 1898. He dedicated his life to the service of God and others, living a life of piety and commitment.

On 30 September 1906, Joaquim Gelada Hugas was ordained as a priest. He tirelessly worked to spread the message of the Gospel and ministered to the spiritual needs of the people he served. Throughout his ministry, he exhibited great dedication, compassion, and love for his fellow human beings.

Tragically, Father Joaquim Gelada Hugas became a victim of the Spanish Civil War, a period of intense political and religious conflict in Spain. He was martyred for his faith on 14 October 1936 in Torrelavega, Santander, Spain. His courageous and unwavering commitment to his beliefs led to his ultimate sacrifice.

In recognition of his martyrdom, Father Joaquim Gelada Hugas was beatified by Pope Francis on 21 October 2017. The beatification ceremony took place at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, with Archbishop Angelo Amato presiding over the celebration.

Blessed Joaquim Gelada Hugas is venerated as one of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs, who gave their lives for their faith during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War. His feast day is celebrated on 14 October, the day of his martyrdom, and he is also remembered on 1 February alongside his fellow Spanish Claretian Martyrs.

Through his life of service, faith, and martyrdom, Blessed Joaquim Gelada Hugas remains an inspiration and a shining example of devotion to God and others. His memory and legacy continue to inspire Catholics worldwide to live out their faith with courage and love.
