Blessed Joaquín Zubillaga Echarri, born on 31 January 1899 in Echeverri, Navarra, Spain, was a lay brother in the Vincentian Congregation of the Mission. He is also known as Blessed Joaquín Zubillaga.
From a young age, Joaquín demonstrated a strong devotion to his faith and a deep desire to serve God. He entered the Vincentian Congregation of the Mission, a religious community focused on serving the poor and marginalized, and dedicated his life to the service of others.
Blessed Joaquín lived during a tumultuous time in Spain's history, marked by the Spanish Civil War. This conflict, characterized by political and religious tensions, led to the persecution of Catholics and religious figures. During this dark period, Joaquín remained committed to his faith and steadfast in his dedication to the Vincentian mission.
Tragically, on 30 November 1936, in Paracuellos de Jarama, Madrid, Blessed Joaquín Zubillaga Echarri was martyred for his unwavering devotion to Catholicism. He became a true witness to the Christian faith, sacrificing his life in defense of his beliefs.
Recognizing his martyrdom and the exemplary virtue he displayed in his life, Pope Francis declared Blessed Joaquín a martyr on 23 March 2017. Then, on 11 November 2017, Pope Francis beatified him, elevating him to the status of Blessed. The beatification recognition ceremony took place at the Palacio Vistalegre Arena in Carabanchel, Madrid, Spain, and was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato and Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra of Madrid.
Blessed Joaquín Zubillaga Echarri serves as an inspiration for Catholics worldwide, reminding us of the courage and dedication needed in times of persecution. His life and martyrdom are a testament to the power of faith and the willingness to give everything for the greater glory of God. As a blessed of the Catholic Church, Blessed Joaquín's feast day is celebrated on 30 November.
