Biography

Blessed Joaquín Frade Eiras, also known as Berardo of Visantoña, was a Franciscan Capuchin priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on April 5, 1878, in Visantoña, Lugo, Spain.

Joaquín Frade Eiras dedicated his life to the service of God and the Church. He entered the religious life and joined the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, known for their dedication to poverty and simplicity. With deep faith and a desire to bring the love of Christ to others, he was ordained a priest.

During the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, an ideological conflict that shook Spain in the 1930s, Joaquín Frade Eiras fearlessly continued to carry out his pastoral duties. Despite the danger and risks faced by religious communities during this period, he remained devoted to his mission of spiritual guidance and providing comfort to those in need.

Tragically, on August 14, 1936, in Jove, Asturias, Spain, Frade Eiras was captured by militants hostile to the Catholic Church. His unwavering faith and refusal to renounce his religious beliefs led to his martyrdom. He was executed for his faith, becoming a witness to the Gospel and a shining example of courage and fidelity to God in the face of persecution.

In recognition of his martyrdom and devotion to the faith, Joaquín Frade Eiras was venerated by Pope Francis on March 27, 2013, through a decree of martyrdom. His beatification followed on October 13, 2013, by Pope Francis, further acknowledging his sanctity and the significance of his sacrifice.
