Biography

Blessed Joan Vilá Colomé, also known as Father Josep of Calella de La Costa, was a devout Franciscan Capuchin who dedicated his life to the service of God and his fellow human beings. He was born on 19 November 1880 in Calella de la Costa, Barcelona, Spain.

Joan Vilá Colomé entered the religious life and made his profession as a Franciscan Capuchin on 8 September 1903. Recognizing his deep devotion and commitment to the Church, he was ordained a priest on 19 March 1904. Throughout his ministry, he tirelessly worked to spread the love and teachings of Jesus Christ, living a life centered on prayer, compassion, and selfless service.

Tragically, during the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, Father Josep Vilá Colomé fell victim to the persecution suffered by many Catholics and religious. For his unwavering faith and refusal to abandon his religious vocation, he was imprisoned. The Marxist forces that held him captive eventually took his life on 9 September 1936 in Barcelona, Spain. Father Vilá Colomé became a martyr of the faith, standing firm in the face of adversity and sacrificing his own life for his beliefs.

Blessed Joan Vilá Colomé's martyrdom did not go unnoticed by the Church. His holiness and steadfast dedication were recognized, and on 5 June 2015, Pope Francis declared him worthy of veneration, issuing a decree of martyrdom. Later, on 21 November 2015, Pope Francis beatified him, a solemn event that took place at the cathedral of Santa Creu i Santa EulÖlia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, highlighting the significance of Father Josep's legacy and sacrifice.

The life of Blessed Joan Vilá Colomé serves as a poignant reminder of the persecution endured by Catholics during a dark period in Spanish history. His unwavering faith, selfless service, and ultimate sacrifice continue to inspire countless individuals and bear testimony to the enduring power of the Catholic faith.
