Biography

Blessed Joan Antoni Burró Mas was born on 28 June 1914 in Barcelona, Spain. At a young age, he felt called to a life of service and joined the Hospitallers of Saint John of God at the age of 14. With great dedication and commitment, he underwent training to become a Brother in the Hospitallers' religious community.

After his training, Brother Joan Antoni Burró Mas was assigned to serve in the community located in Ciempozuelos, Madrid, Spain. It was here that he wholeheartedly embraced the charism of the Hospitallers and strove to live a life of humility, compassion, and selflessness in caring for the sick and marginalized.

Brother Joan Antoni Burró Mas dedicated himself to the service of others, particularly in the nearby military hospital. He exhibited deep empathy towards the patients, providing them with physical and spiritual comfort during their time of need. His genuine love for those he served was evident through his tireless efforts to alleviate their suffering and bring them solace.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, Brother Joan Antoni Burró Mas faced persecution from Marxist militiamen who opposed his religious vocation. On the night of 4 November 1936, he was unjustly taken and subsequently shot in Madrid, Spain, sealing his martyrdom for the Catholic faith.

Recognizing his sacrifice, devotion, and steadfast faith, Pope John Paul II declared Brother Joan Antoni Burró Mas venerable on 14 May 1991, with the decree of martyrdom. It was a testament to his unwavering commitment to Christ and the Church, even in the face of persecution and death.

Later, on 25 October 1992, Pope John Paul II beatified Brother Joan Antoni Burró Mas, further affirming his sanctity and his role as a model of faith and service. As a blessed, he is honored and venerated by the faithful, particularly on his feast days of 5 November and 30 July, commemorating his martyrdom and his status as one of the Martyred Hospitallers of Spain.

Blessed Joan Antoni Burró Mas continues to inspire others through his selfless dedication to the sick and marginalized. His life and martyrdom stand as a powerful example of sacrificial love and unwavering faith, reminding all believers of the immense value and importance of serving others, even in the face of adversity.
