Biography

Blessed Jes√∫s Miquel Girbau, also known as Father Timoteu of Palafrugell, was a Franciscan Capuchin friar who was born on 24 March 1897 in Palafrugell, Girona, Spain. He was baptized with the name Jes√∫s Miquel Girbau and later took the religious name, Timoteu, upon entering the Capuchin order.

Blessed Jes√∫s Miquel Girbau professed his religious vows on 17 September 1916, committing himself to the ideals of poverty, chastity, and obedience. As a dedicated friar, he lived a life of prayer, contemplation, and service to others. He exemplified the Franciscan values of simplicity, humility, and love for all creation.

After completing his theological studies, Father Timoteu was ordained a priest on 20 December 1919. He embarked on his priestly ministry with great zeal, serving in various parishes and communities throughout Spain. He was known for his dedication to the sacraments, his pastoral care for the faithful, and his compassionate approach to those in need.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, Father Timoteu fell victim to the persecution and violence inflicted by the Marxist forces in the country. Imprisoned for his religious beliefs, he remained faithful to his calling even in the face of adversity. On 31 October 1936, he was martyred in Olot, Girona, Spain, brave until the end.

Blessed Jes√∫s Miquel Girbau's selfless sacrifice and unwavering faith were recognized by the Catholic Church. On 5 June 2015, Pope Francis declared him venerable, acknowledging his virtuous life. Later, on 21 November 2015, in a beatification ceremony held at the cathedral of Santa Creu i Santa EulÖlia in Barcelona, Spain, Pope Francis elevated him to the status of Blessed. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, representing Pope Francis.

Today, Blessed Jes√∫s Miquel Girbau is honored and venerated as a model of Christian virtue, an example of courage in the face of persecution, and a witness to the power of faith. His feast day is celebrated on 31 October, the day of his martyrdom, when the faithful remember his life and sacrifice.

As we reflect on the life of Blessed Jes√∫s Miquel Girbau, may we be inspired by his unwavering commitment to God, his dedication to service, and his ultimate sacrifice. May his intercession strengthen our faith and encourage us to follow in his footsteps of selflessness and love.
