Biography

Blessed Jes√∫s Juan Otero, also known as Brother Arnoldo Julian, was a dedicated member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He was born on 6 June 1902 in the town of Abastas in Palencia, Spain.

From a young age, Jes√∫s Juan displayed an exceptional devotion to the Catholic faith and a strong desire to serve others. Recognizing his calling, he joined the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a religious congregation founded by Saint John Baptist de La Salle in the 17th century. The Brothers devoted themselves to the education of children, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Jes√∫s Juan embraced his vocation as a teacher and committed himself wholeheartedly to his duties. His passion for education and his deep faith in God inspired him to provide holistic formation to the students under his care. He not only imparted knowledge but also instilled in them the values of compassion, justice, and integrity.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War that erupted in 1936, Brother Arnoldo Julian, as he was known within the congregation, found himself caught in a wave of violent persecution targeting the Catholic Church. Despite the dangers, he courageously refused to abandon his faith or his commitment to teaching.

On 25 July 1936, Brother Arnoldo Julian was martyred in Montcada, Barcelona. He remained steadfast in his beliefs, willingly accepting persecution and sacrificing his life for his unwavering devotion to Christ. His martyrdom is a testament to his extraordinary faith and his unwavering dedication to his educational vocation.

Recognizing his courageous witness and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his faith, Brother Arnoldo Julian was venerated on 22 June 2004 by Pope John Paul II, who decreed his martyrdom. Later, on 28 October 2007, Pope Benedict XVI solemnly beatified him, affirming the blessedness of his life and his close union with Christ.

Although further details about his life may be limited, the legacy of Blessed Jes√∫s Juan Otero serves as an inspiration and a reminder of the profound impact that educators can have on shaping the hearts and minds of young people. His life and martyrdom continue to guide and inspire the Brothers of the Christian Schools, as well as all those engaged in the noble vocation of teaching.
