Biography

Blessed Jerónimo Alonso Fernández, also known as Javier Benito, was a devout Catholic monk and a member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools. He was born on 1 October 1912 in Villorejo, Burgos, Spain.

From an early age, Jerónimo Alonso showed great piety and a strong inclination towards the religious life. He entered the Marist novitiate and professed his vows, dedicating himself to the service of God and the education of young minds. As a Marist Brother, he lived a life of simplicity, chastity, and obedience, following in the footsteps of his founder, Saint Marcellin Champagnat.

During the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, the hostility towards the Catholic Church intensified. Jerónimo Alonso, along with many other members of religious communities, faced persecution for their unwavering faith and commitment to their religious calling. On 23 August 1936, Jerónimo Alonso was martyred in Toledo, Spain, for refusing to renounce his Catholic beliefs.

His unwavering commitment to Christ and his willingness to lay down his life in defense of his faith made Jerónimo Alonso a true martyr. His courageous testimony continues to inspire countless believers in their own spiritual journey.

In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope Francis approved the decree of martyrology on 3 June 2013, acknowledging Jerónimo Alonso's heroic virtue. Later, on 13 October 2013, Pope Francis beatified him, officially declaring him a Blessed of the Catholic Church.

The life of Blessed Jerónimo Alonso Fernández serves as a compelling example of faith, courage, and self-sacrifice. His memory invites all believers to remain steadfast in their convictions and to strive for holiness, even in the face of adversity.
