Blessed Jeanne Littlejohn, also known as Sister Angèle-Marie, was a devoted member of the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of the Apostles. She professed her first vows on 8 September 1959, taking on the religious name Sister Angèle-Marie.
After making her vows, Sister Angèle-Marie was assigned to the Sisters' house in Bouzarea, Algeria. There, the Sisters operated an orphanage and a boarding school for young girls. For the initial five years, from 1959 to 1964, Sister Angèle-Marie taught embroidery at the school. Her dedication and skill in teaching were evident, and in 1964 she was transferred to the Algiers School of Art in Belcourt, where she would spend the remainder of her life.
Sister Angèle-Marie's service at the Algiers School of Art was marked by her passion for teaching and her commitment to nurturing the artistic talents of her students. She became an influential figure in the lives of many aspiring artists, sharing her knowledge and skills with devotion and patience.
Tragically, Sister Angèle-Marie's life was cut short when she became a victim of martyrdom at the hands of Islamic forces. On Sunday, 3 September 1995, she lost her life in Belcourt, Algiers, Algeria, while serving the community she loved.
Despite her untimely death, the life and legacy of Blessed Jeanne Littlejohn continue to inspire countless individuals. Her selfless commitment to education, her unwavering faith, and her dedication to her students make her a shining example of Christian virtue and sacrifice.
In recognition of her martyrdom, Pope Francis decreed the veneration of Blessed Jeanne Littlejohn on 26 January 2018. Later, on 8 December 2018, Pope Francis beatified her, bestowing upon her the title of Blessed.
