Blessed Jeanbaptistexavier Loir, also known as Jacques-Louis of Besançon, was born on 11 March 1720 in Besançon, Doubs, France. He was the son of Jacques-Louis Loir, the director of the mint in Besançon, and Elizabeth Juliot. Jeanbaptistexavier was baptized on the day of his birth, and he was the sixth of their eight children.
After completing his studies in Lyon, France, Jeanbaptistexavier decided to dedicate his life to God and joined the Franciscan Capuchin friars in May 1740. He made his profession on 9 May 1741 in Lyon and was ordained as a priest.
Throughout his religious life, Jeanbaptistexavier held various positions of leadership within the Capuchin order. From 1761 to 1764, he served as the superior of the convent of Saint Andrew, and from 1764 to 1767, he was the superior of the convent of Saint Francis.
However, during the tumultuous years of the French Revolution, when anti-Catholic sentiments were prevalent, Jeanbaptistexavier faced severe persecution. He was sentenced to be exiled to Guyana and was imprisoned on a ship in the harbor of Rochefort, France. It was aboard the prison ship Deux-Associés that he met his martyrdom.
On 19 May 1794, Blessed Jeanbaptistexavier Loir died aboard the prison ship in Rochefort, Charente-Maritime, France. It is believed that he passed away while in prayer, as his body was found in a position suggestive of his devotion.
The faithful recognized the sanctity of Jeanbaptistexavier's life, and he was venerated on 2 July 1994 by Pope John Paul II, who declared the decree of his martyrdom. Later, on 1 October 1995, Pope John Paul II beatified him, affirming his sainthood and acknowledging him as a model of faith and courage.
Blessed Jeanbaptistexavier Loir's life and death serve as a testament to his unwavering commitment to his religious vocation, even in the face of persecution. He remains an inspiration for believers, reminding them of the price that some have paid for their faith and devotion to God.
