Death: August 27, 1794
Blessed Jean Baptiste Guillaume, also known as Brother Uldaric, was a Salesian brother who devoted his life to his faith and service to God. He was born on 1 February 1755 in Fraisans, Doubs, France. Inspired by his deep faith, he joined the Salesian Order on 16 October 1785, embracing a life of religious dedication and commitment.
During the tumultuous times of the French Revolution, the anti-Catholic persecutions were at their peak. Many religious individuals faced imprisonment and even death for their beliefs. Brother Uldaric was one such victim who became caught in the web of these persecutions.
In 1794, Brother Uldaric found himself imprisoned on a ship in the harbor of Rochefort, France. Confined aboard the prison ship Deux-Associés, he was left to endure the harsh conditions and suffer the consequences of his Catholic faith. It is believed that he was unjustly sentenced to die on this vessel during the anti-Catholic persecutions of the French Revolution.
On 27 August 1794, Brother Uldaric valiantly offered his life as a martyr for his faith. It was aboard the prison ship, where he spent his final moments, steadfast in his dedication to God. His unwavering commitment and sacrifice earned him the title of one of the Martyrs of the Hulks of Rochefort.
Recognizing the holiness and martyrdom of Brother Uldaric, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable on 2 July 1994 through a decree of martyrdom. A year later, on 1 October 1995, Brother Uldaric was beatified by Pope John Paul II. This recognition affirmed his virtuous life and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his faith.
The feast day of Blessed Jean Baptiste Guillaume, Brother Uldaric, is celebrated on 27 August, the day he gave his life as a martyr. His story continues to inspire and remind us of the enduring power of faith, even in the face of extreme persecution and adversity.
