Blessed Jaume Puig Mirosa, also known as Blessed James Puig Mirosa, was a Catholic priest and a member of the Sons of the Holy Family. He was born on 3 June 1908 in Terrasa, Barcelona, Spain. After entering religious life, he became the Superior of his Order and also served as the Director of Colegio Santa María de Blanes in Spain.
During a time when anti-Catholic forces were gathering strength, Blessed Jaume Puig Mirosa took it upon himself to protect the ancient image of the Virgin of Vilar, the patroness of Blanes. Recognizing the importance of this sacred image, he ensured its safety and safeguarded it from desecration or destruction.
Tragically, in the early morning of 30 July 1936, Blessed Jaume Puig Mirosa was martyred on the highway outside of Blanes, Girona, Spain, during the Spanish Civil War. His unwavering faith and commitment to the Catholic Church made him the first martyr of the Sons of the Holy Family.
For many years, his final resting place remained unknown. However, in 2007, his remains were re-interred in the chapel cemetery of San José Manyanet parish of Barcelona, where he found a fitting resting place for his martyrdom.
Blessed Jaume Puig Mirosa's dedication to his faith and selfless act of protecting the sacred image of the Virgin of Vilar exemplify his deep spirituality and commitment to the Catholic Church. Recognizing his martyrdom, Pope Benedict XVI venerated him on 10 May 2012, decreeing his martyrdom. Later, on 13 October 2013, Pope Francis beatified him, officially recognizing his status as a blessed of the Catholic Church.
Blessed Jaume Puig Mirosa's life and martyrdom serve as an inspiration to all faithful Christians, reminding them of the courage and devotion required to uphold their beliefs, even in the face of persecution and adversity. He is venerated and honored on his feast day, which is celebrated on 30 July each year.
