Biography

Blessed Jaume Mases Boncompte, also known as Brother Lambert Carles, was a dedicated member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a religious congregation founded by Saint John Baptist de La Salle. Born on April 14, 1894, in Agramunt, Lleida, Spain, he lived during a tumultuous period in the history of his country.

As a young man, Jaume Mases Boncompte felt a calling to the religious life and joined the Brothers of the Christian Schools, also known as the De La Salle Brothers. He embraced the mission of the congregation, which was to provide education to the poor and disadvantaged youth.

However, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 brought great turmoil to the country. The conflict pitted Republicans, who supported the Second Spanish Republic, against Nationalists, led by General Francisco Franco. The tension between these factions had a profound impact on the Catholic Church in Spain, as anticlerical sentiments were prevalent.

During this period of persecution, Brother Lambert Carles faced severe hardships due to his religious affiliation. Despite the danger, he remained steadfast in his commitment to provide education and spiritual guidance to those in need. He courageously continued his work, knowing the risks involved.

Tragically, on December 16, 1936, Brother Lambert Carles was martyred in Barcelona, Spain. His unwavering faith and dedication to his vocation led to his ultimate sacrifice. The exact circumstances of his martyrdom remain unknown, but his courageous witness to the Gospel and his commitment to the Christian education of young people were recognized by the Church.

In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope John Paul II declared Brother Lambert Carles as Blessed on June 22, 2004, issuing a decree of martyrdom. This official acknowledgment by the Church confirmed that he willingly laid down his life for his faith. Later, on October 28, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, bestowing on him the title of Blessed.

Blessed Jaume Mases Boncompte serves as an inspiring example of courage and faithfulness in the face of persecution. He is remembered on December 16th, the day of his martyrdom, as a martyr and a witness to the Gospel. His life and sacrifice continue to remind us of the importance of education and the enduring power of faith in times of adversity.
