Biography

Blessed Jaume Girón PuigmitjÖ was a member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by Saint Anthony Mary Claret. He was born on 11 October 1887 in Sant Cristúfol les Fonts, Girona, Spain.

Jaume Girón PuigmitjÖ professed as a member of the Claretians on 21 November 1916, dedicating his life to the service of God and the Church. Recognizing his devotion and capability, he was ordained as a priest on 15 March 1919. He embarked on his mission to spread the teachings of Christ and offer pastoral care to the faithful.

Unfortunately, during the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, Blessed Jaume Girón PuigmitjÖ fell victim to the religious persecution that swept through the country. On 5 September 1936, in Castellfollit de Riubregós, Barcelona, he was martyred for his faith.

Blessed Jaume Girón PuigmitjÖ's martyrdom was a testament to his unwavering commitment to his religious beliefs. His dedication and sacrifice exemplify the selflessness and courage of countless individuals who were persecuted for their faith during that challenging period.

In recognition of his martyrdom and his exemplary life as a Claretian missionary, Pope Francis declared him venerable on 21 December 2016 with a decree of martyrdom. Later, on 21 October 2017, Pope Francis beatified him in a solemn ceremony held at the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. Archbishop Angelo Amato presided over the beatification ceremony, underscoring the significance of Blessed Jaume Girón PuigmitjÖ's sacrifice and his enduring example of faith and service.

Blessed Jaume Girón PuigmitjÖ is remembered and celebrated on two feast days: 5 September, the day of his martyrdom, and 1 February, along with the other 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs. These feast days serve as reminders of the steadfast faith and sacrifice of Blessed Jaume Girón PuigmitjÖ and his fellow martyrs.
