Biography

Blessed Jaume Buch Canals, also known as Brother Jaume Buch, was a Salesians brother who dedicated his life to serving God and the youth. He was born on April 9, 1889, in Bescanó, Girona, Spain, and at the age of 14, he joined the Salesians in Girona. After his initial formation, he made his profession in Barcelona, Spain, in 1908, committing himself to a life of religious service.

Brother Jaume Buch then became a teacher in Valencia, Spain, where he had a profound impact on his students. His dedication to education, coupled with his genuine care and concern for the well-being of his students, made him immensely popular and admired by all who knew him. He was known for his ability to inspire and guide the younger generation, instilling in them a sense of responsibility, integrity, and love for their faith.

One of Brother Jaume Buch's particular devotions was to Mary, Help of Christians. He had a deep and abiding love for the Blessed Virgin Mary, considering her as a constant source of guidance and solace in his life. He tirelessly worked to spread devotion to Mary among his students and fellow brothers, encouraging them to entrust themselves to her loving intercession.

During the tumultuous years of the Spanish Civil War, Brother Jaume Buch maintained his steadfast devotion to his faith and his commitment to the Salesian mission. However, his unwavering dedication to God ultimately led to his martyrdom. On July 31, 1936, in El Saler, Valencia, Spain, he was persecuted and killed for his religious beliefs.

The heroic virtues demonstrated by Brother Jaume Buch throughout his life, as well as the circumstances surrounding his martyrdom, were officially recognized by the Catholic Church. On December 20, 1999, Pope John Paul II issued a decree of martyrdom, venerated him as a martyr for the faith. On March 11, 2001, Pope John Paul II further honored him by beatifying him.

Blessed Jaume Buch Canals is commemorated on July 31 as one of the Martyred Salesians of Valencia, Catalunya, and Aragón. Additionally, he is remembered on September 22, along with his fellow martyrs. His story serves as a testament to the power of faith, devotion, and selfless service in even the most challenging of circumstances.
