Biography

Blessed Jane Scopelli, also known as Giovanna Scopelli or Jane of Reggio, was born in 1428 in Reggio d' Emilia, Italy. Even from a young age, Jane felt a strong calling to religious life, but her family opposed this vocation. Out of obedience, she decided to remain in her parents' home and dedicated herself to a pious and austere life.

After her parents passed away, Jane was finally able to pursue her desire for religious life. In 1475, she founded the Our Lady of the People Carmelite priory in Reggio, Italy, and served as its first prioress. She was deeply committed to the life of poverty and humility, refusing all endowments or gifts to the convent unless they were given as pure alms, without any strings or conditions attached.

Blessed Jane Scopelli was known for her strong devotion to prayer, and it was said that her prayers were often answered with miraculous occurrences. Her unwavering faith and dedication to serving God gained her a reputation for spiritual wisdom and holiness among her peers.

Blessed Jane Scopelli passed away in 1491 of natural causes, leaving behind a legacy of piety, humility, and devotion to the Carmelite way of life. Her beatification was officially recognized by Pope Pius VI in 1771, confirming her cultus and acknowledging her as a Blessed in the Catholic Church.
