Biography

Blessed Jane of Portugal, also known as Jane the Princess, Joan, Joana, or Johanna, was a Princess born on 16 February 1452 in Lisbon, Portugal. She was the daughter of Elizabeth and King Alphonsus V of Portugal.

In 1473, at the age of twenty-one, Jane made a significant decision that would shape the course of her life. She entered the Dominican convent at Aveiro, Portugal, showing a strong inclination towards a religious vocation. However, the royal family objected to her taking vows, fearing that it would hinder the continuity of the royal bloodline if she were to marry.

Though pressured to pursue arranged marriages, Jane firmly stood her ground and resisted these unions, remaining committed to her desire for a religious life. She patiently waited until the succession to the throne was secured in 1485, after which she finally took her religious vows.

Jane's commitment and devotion to her religious calling were unwavering. She dedicated herself to a life of prayer, humility, and selflessness. Known for her kindness, she exhibited compassion towards others, especially those in need. Through her actions, she exemplified the virtues taught by the Dominican order.

Blessed Jane of Portugal peacefully passed away on 12 May 1490 in Aveiro, Portugal, having lived a life of piety and service to God. Her death was attributed to natural causes.

Recognizing her exceptional holiness and the impact she had on those around her, the Catholic Church officially recognized her beatification on 31 December 1692 under the pontificate of Pope Innocent XII. Since then, she has been venerated as a blessed.

Blessed Jane of Portugal's feast day is celebrated on 12 May, the day of her death. Her story continues to inspire many, reminding them of the importance of remaining steadfast in one's faith and the pursuit of God's will, even in the face of societal expectations and pressures.
