Blessed Jan Chrysostom Zavrel

Biography

Blessed Jan Chrysostom Zavrel, also known as Dominique-Marie and Domenico Maria Zawrel, was a Dominican friar and priest in the Congregation of Saint Sabina in Prague, situated in modern-day Czech Republic. He was widely recognized as Father Chrysostom within his religious community.

In May 1776, Father Jan made a significant decision to join the Cistercian Congregation of Casamari. His profession ceremony took place on 6 June 1777, where he received the name Father Domenico Maria. He dedicated himself to serving the Casamari abbey, taking on the role of master of novices. His prayerful life and pious wisdom were highly esteemed by his fellow friars.

During a time marked by anti-Christian sentiments, French revolutionary soldiers invaded the Casamari abbey, disrespectfully scattering the reserved Eucharistic Hosts in mockery of the Real Presence. Father Jan, along with several brother monks, were deeply disturbed by this sacrilege and started a period of Adoration in the abbey's infirmary.

Tragically, the soldiers stormed into the infirmary and mercilessly murdered Father Jan and his companions. Their martyrdom serves as a testament to their unwavering faith and commitment to the Holy Eucharist.

Blessed Jan Chrysostom Zavrel, born in 1725 in Chodov, Prague, dedicated his life to the pursuit of holiness and service to God. His remarkable journey eventually led him to Casamari Abbey, where he met his untimely death on 13 May 1799. In recognition of his martyrdom, his relics were enshrined in the abbey church in 1951.

The veneration of Blessed Jan Chrysostom Zavrel was officially recognized by Pope Francis on 26 May 2020 through a decree of martyrdom. To honor his sacrifice, Pope Francis proceeded to beatify him on 17 April 2021. The beatification recognition was celebrated in a special ceremony held at the Cistercian Abbey of Casamari in Veroli, Italy, highlighting the significance of his spiritual journey and martyrdom within the Cistercian community.
