Blessed Jan Beyzym, also known as Father Jan Beyzym, was born on 15 May 1850 in the village of Beyzymy Wielkie, Poland (now in Ukraine). He was the son of a Polish freedom fighter, reflecting his family's strong patriotic background.
Jan Beyzym entered the Society of Jesus and was ordained as a Jesuit priest. He dedicated his life to education, serving as a teacher at Jesuit boarding schools in Tarnopol and Chyrów. However, his true calling came when he felt called to serve the leper community in Madagascar.
In 1898, Father Beyzym embarked on a missionary journey to the remote region near Tananariwa, Madagascar, where he encountered the heartbreaking conditions of lepers. With his deep compassion and unwavering commitment, he made it his life's mission to improve the lives of those afflicted by the disease.
Realizing the urgent need for proper medical care and support for the lepers, Father Beyzym began the construction of a leper hospital at Marana, Madagascar in 1902. Despite numerous challenges and setbacks, he persisted and successfully completed the hospital project nine years later. The hospital became a beacon of hope for the leper community, providing essential medical treatment and nurturing their spiritual well-being.
Father Beyzym's tireless efforts and selfless dedication earned him the admiration and respect of the lepers he served. His deep faith and compassion touched the lives of countless individuals, demonstrating the transformative power of love and care. He dedicated his days to easing their suffering and bringing them closer to God through his prayers and pastoral guidance.
Blessed Jan Beyzym passed away on 2 October 1912 in Marana, Fianarantsoa, Madagascar, from natural causes. In 1993, his relics were entombed at the Jesuit basilica in Krakow, Poland, where he is venerated by believers seeking his intercession.
His compassion, commitment, and unwavering faith continue to inspire people around the world. In recognition of his extraordinary virtues, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable on 21 December 1992 and beatified him on 18 August 2002, both ceremonies taking place in Krakow, Poland.
