Biography

Blessed James The Almsgiver, also known as "Blessed James of Chiusi," was born into a wealthy family in Citta delle Pieve, Lombardy, Italy. Although he initially pursued a career in law and achieved success in his studies, he felt a calling to dedicate his life to God and entered the priesthood.

His deep compassion for the sick and marginalized led him to restore a dilapidated hospital in his hometown. There, he tirelessly cared for the infirm, providing not only physical aid but also spiritual comfort and guidance. His selflessness extended beyond the hospital walls, as he offered free legal advice to those in need, ensuring that justice was not a privilege limited to the wealthy.

Sadly, Blessed James discovered that the hospital's funding had been misused, resulting in its deteriorating state. Determined to rectify this injustice, he courageously confronted the bishop of Chiusi, Italy, and initiated legal proceedings to reclaim the misappropriated funds. This act of standing up against corruption ultimately cost him his life.

On January 15, 1304, Blessed James The Almsgiver was assassinated by paid hitmen, commissioned by the bishop himself. His life was tragically cut short, but his legacy of selfless service and unwavering commitment to justice left an indelible mark.

After his martyrdom, Blessed James's body was buried in a stand of trees. Miraculously, a group of shepherds discovered his grave, finding the trees surrounding it in full bloom during the dead of winter. This extraordinary sign of nature's reverence for his sanctity served as a testament to the exceptional virtues he embodied.

Although his official canonization status remains undisclosed, Blessed James The Almsgiver is venerated for his exemplary compassion, generosity, and uncompromising pursuit of justice. His feast day is celebrated on January 28th, commemorating his remarkable life and sacrifice in service to others.
