Biography

Blessed James of Cerqueto, also known as James of Cerqueto, was born in the small town of Cerqueto in Perugia, Umbria, Italy, in the year 1285. Little is known about his early life, but at some point, he joined the Order of Saint Augustine and became an Augustinian friar.

James's deep devotion to God led him to choose a life of solitude and prayer, becoming a hermit at Cerqueto, Italy. As a hermit, he sought spiritual perfection and dedicated himself to a life of penance and contemplation. It is said that his prayers were so fervent and powerful that they obtained permission for the Augustinians to wear white habits in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Despite living a secluded life, James of Cerqueto gained a reputation as a gifted preacher and a miracle worker. He would occasionally leave his hermitage to preach to the people, delivering inspiring sermons and spreading the message of God's love and mercy. Many flocked to hear his words and witness the miracles that seemed to accompany his presence.

James's holiness and profound spirituality touched the lives of many. Even after his death on 17 April 1366, in the Church of Saint Augustine in Perugia, Italy, his impact continued to be felt. Numerous miracles were reported at his grave, attesting to the intercessory power and sanctity of this blessed friar.

Due to the overwhelming number of miracles attributed to James of Cerqueto, his remains were re-interred in a solemn ceremony in 1754. The Church recognized the great devotion and veneration that people had towards him, and on 10 June 1895, Pope Leo XIII officially beatified him, confirming his cultus.

Today, Blessed James of Cerqueto is remembered and honored by the Augustinians and the Catholic faithful, particularly on his feast days, which are celebrated on 17 April and 31 October. His life serves as an example of selfless dedication to God, a testament to the power of prayer, and a reminder of the spiritual rewards found in a life of humility and deep faith.
