Biography

Blessed James Grissinger, also known as James Griesinger, James of Ulm, and Giacomo Griesinger da Ulma, was born in 1407 in Ulm, Swabia (modern Germany). Little is known about his early life, but it is recorded that in 1432, he served as a mercenary for the army of Naples, Italy.

However, James became disillusioned with the violent nature of military life and sought a different path. In 1437, he decided to embark on a new journey and worked as a secretary to a lawyer in Capua, Italy for a period of five years. Unfortunately, financial difficulties led him to rejoin the army briefly, but his true calling awaited him.

In 1441, James left the military for good and entered the Dominican Order as a lay brother in Bologna, Italy. There, he dedicated himself to a life of prayer, simplicity, and artistic expression. James spent the majority of his next 50 years serving the Church by working skillfully with stained glass and painting images on church windows.
