Biography

Blessed James Benefatti, also known as Giacomo Benfatti di Mantova, James of Mantua, James of Benefactis, and Father of the Poor, was a renowned Dominican figure in 13th-century Mantua, Italy. Born in the late 13th century, James dedicated his life to serving God and his fellow human beings.

James joined the Dominican Order and quickly distinguished himself as a devoted and studious theologian. His deep knowledge of theology led him to be recognized as a Doctor of Theology, a title that highlighted his exceptional understanding of the Catholic faith. Ordained as a priest, James demonstrated remarkable compassion and love for those in need, earning him the title "Father of the Poor."

During his time in the Dominican community, James formed a close friendship with Nicholas Boccasino, a fellow friar who would later become Pope Benedict XI. Their bond remained strong throughout their lives, and James supported Nicholas in various roles, including as a papal legate.

In 1303, James was appointed as the Bishop of Mantua, assuming a position of great influence and responsibility within the Church. He took his role seriously, providing diligent pastoral care to his flock. James became especially renowned for his devotion to the poor and his tireless efforts to alleviate their suffering. During a devastating plague epidemic, he fearlessly attended to the sick, showing them compassion and offering spiritual solace.

James also dedicated himself to improving the physical state of the Church. He oversaw the reconstruction of his cathedral and undertook the refurbishment of several churches in Mantua. His efforts not only enhanced the sacred spaces but also uplifted the faithful in their spiritual journey.

Due to his exceptional abilities and unwavering dedication, James was entrusted by Pope John XXII to serve as his papal legate. In this role, he executed various important assignments on behalf of the pontiff, further solidifying his reputation as a trusted servant of the Church.

Blessed James Benefatti passed away on November 19, 1332, in his beloved Mantua, Italy. Even in death, his significance remained evident. When his body was exhumed in 1480 and again in 1604, it was found to be miraculously incorrupt, a testament to his holiness and the divine grace bestowed upon him.

The veneration of Blessed James Benefatti has grown steadily throughout the centuries. His cultus, or the devotion of the faithful, was confirmed in 1859 by Pope Pius IX, who beatified him.
