Biography

Blessed Jaime Gascón Bordas, also known as Father Jaime of Saint Teresa, was a Spanish priest and a member of the Discalced Carmelites. He was born on July 25, 1886, in Forcall, Castellón de la Plana, Spain. Growing up in a devout Catholic family, Jaime developed a strong faith and felt a calling to the priesthood from a young age.

Jaime entered the Discalced Carmelites, a religious order known for its emphasis on contemplative prayer and the pursuit of perfection. He displayed a deep commitment to his religious vocation and dedicated himself to a life of prayer, study, and service to others. Throughout his years as a Carmelite, Jaime embraced the teachings of Saint Teresa of Avila and sought to live out her spirituality.

However, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 brought about a period of intense religious persecution in Spain. As the conflict escalated, anti-Catholic sentiment grew, and countless priests, religious, and lay faithful became targets of violence. Tragically, Father Jaime Gascón Bordas fell victim to this persecution and was martyred for his faith on July 24, 1936, in Barcelona, Spain. He bravely embraced his fate, remaining steadfast in his commitment to Christ until the end.

Following his martyrdom, Father Jaime Gascón Bordas was venerated for his heroic witness to the faith. On June 22, 2004, Pope John Paul II recognized his martyrdom with a decree, officially acknowledging his exemplary life and death. Later, on October 28, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, declaring him blessed and elevating him as an intercessor and model of holiness for the Catholic faithful.

The feast day of Blessed Jaime Gascón Bordas is celebrated on July 24th each year, commemorating his martyrdom and inviting the faithful to reflect on his courageous witness. As a devoted priest and member of the Discalced Carmelites, he serves as an inspiration to all those who seek to follow Christ wholeheartedly and to remain faithful to the Gospel, even in the face of persecution.
