Biography

Blessed Jacinto De Los Ángeles, also known as Jacinto de los Ángeles Martínez, was a married layman and faithful catechist in the archdiocese of Antequera-Oaxaca, Mexico. He was born around the years 1660-1663 in the village of San Francisco Cajonos, situated in Oaxaca, Mexico. Jacinto belonged to the Zapotec Indians, an indigenous community in the region.

Despite being a layman, Jacinto dedicated himself to spreading the teachings of the Catholic faith, particularly among his fellow Zapotec people. He was known for his deep devotion to God and his unwavering commitment to the Church. Jacinto's tireless efforts as a catechist helped to strengthen and preserve the Catholic faith among the Zapotec community.

During a tragic period marked by religious persecution, Jacinto faced immense challenges. In the year 1700, he was confronted with a harrowing choice – to renounce his faith and worship idols or to remain steadfast in his devotion to God. Refusing to abandon his Catholic beliefs, Jacinto courageously stood firm and chose martyrdom over apostasy.

On the evening of 15th September 1700, Jacinto was mercilessly hacked to death by a violent mob in his hometown of San Francisco Cajonos, Oaxaca. The gruesome manner of his death exemplified his steadfast commitment to his faith, as he remained resolute in his refusal to renounce the Catholic Church.

Recognizing the sanctity of Jacinto's life and the heroic virtue he exhibited in his martyrdom, Pope John Paul II declared him as Blessed Jacinto De Los Ángeles on 1st August 2002. The beatification ceremony, celebrating this recognition of his holiness, took place at the renowned Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, Mexico.

Blessed Jacinto De Los Ángeles, a devoted husband, catechist, and martyr, continues to be venerated for his unwavering faith and selfless dedication to the Catholic Church. His feast day is celebrated on 15th September, commemorating the day of his martyrdom. Through his example, he inspires believers to remain steadfast in their faith, even in the face of persecution and adversity.
