Biography

Blessed Isnard De Chiampo, also known as Isnard of Vicenza or Isnardo, was a Dominican friar and a significant figure in the early days of the Dominican Order. Born in Chiampo, in the diocese of Vicenza, Italy, Isnard dedicated his life to the service of God and the preaching of the Gospel.

In 1219, Isnard had the honorable privilege of receiving the cowl from Saint Dominic de Guzman himself, the founder of the Dominican Order. Inspired and guided by the teachings of his mentor, Isnard became renowned for his eloquence and passionate preaching, often traveling to spread the Word of God.

Despite his dedication to his religious duties, Isnard faced adversity due to his physical appearance. He was known as a "fat friar" and, unfortunately, was subjected to mockery and ridicule as he went about his mission of preaching. However, Isnard remained steadfast and undeterred, focusing on the importance of his spiritual calling rather than allowing the opinions of others to hinder his work.

Isnard's unwavering commitment to his faith led him to become the founder and first prior of the renowned friary in Pavia, Italy. Through his leadership, the friary became a place of spiritual nourishment and growth for the Dominican community.

While Isnard's specific representation is unknown, his dedication to the Dominican Order and his tireless efforts to promote the Gospel serve as a testament to his enduring legacy. On March 19th, festivities are held to honor Blessed Isnard De Chiampo, celebrating his contributions to the faith. Additionally, in Pavia, Italy, another feast day is observed on March 22nd, commemorating his connection to the region and the spiritual growth fostered there.

The virtuous and exemplary life of Blessed Isnard De Chiampo was acknowledged by Pope Benedict XV, who beatified him on March 12th, 1919, confirming the cultus devoted to him.
