Biography

Blessed Isidre Costa Hons, also known as "Blessed Isidro Costa Hons" or simply "Blessed Isidre Costa," was a devoted member of the Claretians and a martyr of the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 5 January 1909 in Taradell, a small town in Barcelona, Spain.

Isidre Costa Hons entered the religious life and made his profession as a Claretian on 16 May 1931. The Claretians, also known as the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, are a Catholic religious congregation founded by St. Anthony Mary Claret in 1849. The congregation focuses on missionary work, education, and other spiritual ministries.

During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Isidre Costa Hons courageously stood firm in his faith despite the persecution and violence directed towards the Catholic Church and its followers. On 11 November 1936, he was tragically shot to death at Mas Claret, located in Sant Pere dels Arquells, Lleida, Spain. This act of martyrdom exemplified his unwavering commitment to his beliefs.

On 21 December 2016, Pope Francis recognized the martyrdom of Isidre Costa Hons, officially declaring him venerable. This significant step in the process of canonization acknowledges his heroic perseverance in the face of adversity and his sacrifice for the sake of his faith. The beatification of Blessed Isidre Costa Hons took place on 21 October 2017, with a ceremony that occurred at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. Archbishop Angelo Amato presided over the beatification ceremony, representing the Holy See.

Blessed Isidre Costa Hons is honored as one of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs, commemorated on 1 February. Additionally, his feast day falls on 11 November, the day he was martyred.

As a Claretian martyr, Isidre Costa Hons stands as a compelling example of unwavering faith and dedication to serving God, even in the face of persecution. His life and sacrifice continue to inspire and encourage Catholics around the world.
