Death: October 31, 1930
Blessed Irene Stefani, also known as Aurelia Mercede Stefani and Sister Nyaatha (which translates to "Mother of Mercy"), was a remarkable Consolata Missionary Sisters nun who dedicated her life to serving others. Born on 22 August 1891 in Anfo, Brescia, Italy, she felt a deep calling to serve God and devoted herself to a life of missionary work.
In 1915, Irene chose the name Irene when she professed her vows as a nun. She was sent to Kenya to carry out her mission of compassion and healing. During World War I, she served tirelessly in hospitals, providing care for the sick and wounded in both Kenya and Tanzania. Irene's unwavering dedication to her work earned her great respect and admiration.
From 1920 to 1930, Irene taught at the Gekondi mission, where she also continued her efforts to provide medical care to those in need. Her selflessness, love, and compassion touched countless lives, gaining her a reputation as a true angel of mercy.
Tragically, Blessed Irene Stefani's life was cut short on 31 October 1930, when she succumbed to bubonic plague. She contracted the disease while caring for the sick, never hesitating to put her own life at risk in order to alleviate the suffering of others. Her courageous sacrifice and unwavering commitment to the Gospel exemplify the essence of her faith and dedication to humanity.
In recognition of her heroic virtues, Pope Benedict XVI declared her venerable on 2 April 2011. Further acknowledging her extraordinary life, Pope Francis beatified Irene Stefani on 23 May 2015. The beatification ceremony took place in Nyeri, Kenya, with Cardinal John Njue and Cardinal Polycarp Pengo as the chief celebrants.
One of the miracles attributed to her intercession involved a holy water font in a parish church in Nipepe, Diocese of Lichinga, Niassa, Mozambique. The font remained miraculously full despite the ongoing conflicts and upheaval caused by warring "liberation" armies. This extraordinary event sustained a group of refugee catechists who sought solace and protection in the church.
Blessed Irene Stefani's life serves as a shining example of faith, selflessness, and care for the marginalized. Her unwavering commitment to God's work in the face of great adversity inspires all who learn of her story. May she continue to be a guiding light for missionaries, healthcare workers, and all those who strive to make the world a better place.
