Blessed Inés Rodríguez Fernández, also known as María Inés of Saint Joseph, was a Conceptionist nun who became a martyr during the Spanish Civil War. She was born on November 2, 1889, in Puebla de Sanabria, Zamora, Spain. Inés dedicated her life to the service of God and entered the religious life as a Conceptionist nun.
Inés Rodríguez Fernández's early years were marked by a deep sense of devotion and spirituality. Known for her piety and love for God, she embraced the religious life and entered the Convent of the Immaculate Conception in Madrid, Spain. In the convent, she took the name María Inés of Saint Joseph, reflecting her deep devotion to the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph.
The Spanish Civil War erupted in 1936, bringing with it a wave of violence and persecution against the Catholic Church. Inés, along with her fellow sisters in the convent, faced great danger and hostility but remained steadfast in their faith and commitment to their vocation. Recognizing the risks they were taking, the nuns chose to stay and continue their religious duties, offering solace and support to those affected by the conflict.
Tragically, on August 22, 1936, Inés Rodríguez Fernández became a victim of the violence that plagued her country during this tumultuous time. In the face of persecution, torture, and martyrdom, she held onto her unwavering faith until the very end. In recognition of her steadfast commitment and sacrifice, Pope Francis declared her a martyr on January 15, 2019.
On June 1, 2019, in a moving ceremony held at the Cathedral of La Almudena in Madrid, Spain, Blessed Inés Rodríguez Fernández was officially beatified by Pope Francis. The beatification celebration was presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu, conveying the Church's recognition of her sanctity and her intercessory power.
