Martyr

Biography

Blessed Iacobus Bunzo Gengoro was a young boy born in 1618 in Japan. He was the son of Blessed Thomas and Maria Gengoro. From an early age, Iacobus showed great devotion to the Catholic faith and became a member of the Confraternity of the Rosary.

Tragically, at the tender age of two, Iacobus fell victim to the intense persecutions that occurred during the reign of governor Yetsundo. These persecutions aimed to eradicate Catholicism in Japan. It was during this dark period that Iacobus, along with many other faithful Catholics, was martyred for his unwavering belief in Christ.

On 16 August, Iacobus was crucified upside down soon after sunrise in Kokura, Fukuoka, Japan. This brutal and painful execution method mirrored the martyrdom of Saint Peter, highlighting Iacobus's profound love and commitment to his faith. Following his martyrdom, his body was burned, and the ashes were scattered.

Blessed Iacobus Bunzo Gengoro is honored as one of the 205 Martyrs of Japan, a group of individuals who laid down their lives for the sake of their Catholic faith during this period of persecution.

Recognizing his exceptional witness and sacrifice, Pope Pius IX decreed his martyrdom on 26 February 1866. Then, on 7 May 1867, Pope Pius IX beatified him, placing him among the blessed of the Catholic Church.

Today, Blessed Iacobus Bunzo Gengoro is venerated on 16 August, the day of his crucifixion, and on 10 September, along with the other Martyrs of Japan. This two-year-old boy, though young in age, serves as an inspiration for his unwavering dedication and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his faith. Through his intercession, may we find the courage to remain steadfast in our commitment to Catholicism, even in the face of adversity.
