Biography

Blessed Hugh Canefro, also known as Hugh of Genoa, Hugh of Canefri, and Hugo, was born in 1148 to the Italian nobility in Castellazzo Bormida, Italy. He was deeply devoted to serving others and dedicated his life to the care of the sick and poor.

During his younger years, Blessed Hugh Canefro fought in the Third Crusade, demonstrating his courage and commitment to defending the Christian faith. However, it was his experiences as a member of the Knights of Malta that shaped his path towards holiness. As a knight, he exemplified the virtue of selflessness and was known for his acts of charity and compassion.

In his later years, Blessed Hugh Canefro was assigned to the Saint John Commandery hospital in Genoa, Italy. It was here that he truly exhibited his profound devotion to serving others. Recognizing the urgent need for clothing to care for the sick, he selflessly sold his armor to purchase clothes for the nurses. This act of sacrifice highlighted his deep understanding of the inherent dignity of every person, as well as his commitment to truly embodying the teachings of Christ.

For a remarkable period of fifty years, Blessed Hugh Canefro dedicated himself to serving the sick poor in the hospital.
