Biography

Blessed Hryhorii Khomyshyn, also known as Gregor Khomysyn, Gregory Chomyshyn, Gregory Khomyshyn, Grzegorz Chomyszyn, Hryhorij Khomyshyn, Hryhorij Khomysyn, Hryhory Khomyshyn, and Hryhory Khomysyn, was a Greek Catholic priest and bishop who became a martyr under the communist regime in Eastern Europe.

Hryhorii Khomyshyn was born on 25 March 1867 in Hadynkivtsi, Ternopil District, Ukraine. He was ordained as a priest on 18 November 1893. Following his ordination, he pursued further studies in theology at the University of Vienna, Austria, from 1894 to 1899.

In 1902, Father Khomyshyn was appointed as the rector of the seminary in Lviv, Ukraine, where he played a vital role in the formation and education of future priests. His dedication to his work and his commitment to the Greek Catholic Church earned him a reputation as a respected and influential clergyman.

Recognizing his exceptional leadership qualities and theological acumen, Father Khomyshyn was consecrated as the Bishop of Stanislaviv (modern Ivano-Frankivsk), Ukraine, on 6 May 1904. As the bishop of this diocese, he tirelessly served his flock, promoting the teachings of the Catholic Church and advocating for the rights and spiritual well-being of his people.

However, the rise of communist power in Eastern Europe posed a grave threat to the Catholic Church and its clergy. In 1939, Bishop Khomyshyn was arrested by the NKVD for his unwavering faith and commitment to his religious duties. Although released after a brief period, he continued to face oppression and persecution under the communist regime.

In April 1945, Bishop Khomyshyn was once again arrested, this time being deported to Kiev, Ukraine. He endured severe hardships and brutal treatment while imprisoned by the NKVD. Sadly, on 17 January 1947, Bishop Hryhorii Khomyshyn passed away in the NKVD prison in Kiev, Ukraine, as a result of the inhumane conditions he endured.

Blessed Hryhorii Khomyshyn is remembered as one of the Martyrs Killed Under Communist Regimes in Eastern Europe. His unwavering faith, courage, and dedication to his pastoral duties in the face of persecution serve as an inspiration to all believers. His feast day is commemorated on 28 December, and sometimes on 17 January on certain calendars. Furthermore, he is also celebrated on 27 June as one of the Martyrs Killed Under Communist Regimes in Eastern Europe.

Pope John Paul II recognized the martyrdom of Hryhorii Khomyshyn and proclaimed him as Blessed on 27 June 2001 during his visit to Ukraine. This beatification serves as a testament to Bishop Khomyshyn's sacrifice and his unwavering commitment to his faith, the Church, and his people.
