Biography

Blessed Hroznata of Bohemia, also known as Hrornata or Croznato, was born in the year 1160 in Hroznetin, located in the Karlovarsk√Ω kraj region of the Czech Republic. He was born into a noble family of Bohemia, and he had a sister named Bozena who would later become a saint herself.

Hroznata lived a life of prosperity and happiness as a married layman. However, tragedy struck when both his beloved wife and their only child died suddenly. The profound grief and loss led Hroznata to seek solace and meaning in his life.

Inspired by a deep spiritual calling, Hroznata decided to dedicate himself to a life of prayer and service to God. He founded the Premonstratensian abbey at Tapi, situated in Bavaria, Germany. Hroznata entered the monastery as a monk, seeking a life of contemplation and devotion.

However, his path was not without challenges. Hroznata found himself at the mercy of ruthless robbers who threw him into a dark dungeon, intending to leave him to die as they fled with their ill-gotten gains. In this dire situation, Hroznata's faith and resolve were tested. But he continued to trust in God's providence and clung to his vows of obedience, poverty, and chastity.

Days turned into weeks, and Hroznata endured hunger and isolation in the dungeon. However, through a divine intervention, Hroznata miraculously survived the ordeal. It is said that his unwavering faith and courageous spirit caught the attention of his captors, who eventually released him unharmed.

Following this harrowing experience, Hroznata redoubled his efforts to lead a life of holiness and service. He dedicated himself tirelessly to the spiritual and physical welfare of his fellow monks and the local community. Many sought his counsel and guidance, as Hroznata's wisdom and humility were evident to all who encountered him.

Despite his noble background, Hroznata remained humble and unassuming, always prioritizing the needs of others over his own. He lived a life of self-denial and simplicity, setting an example of virtue and devotion for those around him.

Blessed Hroznata's earthly journey came to an end on July 14, 1217, in Stáry Kynsperk, also located in the Karlovarsk√Ω kraj region of the Czech Republic. It is believed that he died of starvation, worn down by his austere lifestyle and the rigors of his service.

Blessed Hroznata's holiness and the impact of his life were recognized by the Catholic Church. On September 16, 1897, Pope Leo XIII beatified him, conferring official recognition of his sanctity. Today, Blessed Hroznata is commemorated and venerated by the faithful on his feast day, which falls on July 14.
