Blessed Hildemar Of Arrouaise

Blessed

Feast Day: January 13

Biography

Blessed Hildemar of Arrouaise, also known as Heldemar or Hilmar, was a court chaplain to William the Conqueror in England during the 11th century. He was born in Tounai, Belgium, and led a remarkable life dedicated to God and the pursuit of sanctity.

After serving as the court chaplain, Hildemar felt a calling to a more solitary and contemplative life. He became a hermit in the forest of Arrouaise, located in Artois, which is now in modern-day France. It was in this secluded and peaceful setting that his reputation for sanctity began to attract disciples, who were drawn to his wisdom and exemplary life.

Inspired by the growing number of disciples who joined him, Hildemar decided to establish a monastic community. Together with his followers, he founded the Augustinian monastery at Arrouaise. This monastery became known for its strict adherence to the Augustinian rule and its commitment to prayer, contemplation, and serving the local community.

Unfortunately, Hildemar's life was cut short by tragedy. In approximately 1097, he fell victim to a treacherous act of violence. A priest, pretending to be an Augustinian novice, assassinated Hildemar. The reasons for this act remain unclear, but it was undoubtedly a great loss for the monastic community and all who revered Hildemar's holiness.

Despite his untimely death, Hildemar's legacy lived on. His devotion to God and his efforts in establishing the Augustinian monastery left a lasting impact on the religious community. His disciples and fellow monks carried on his teachings, continuing the work he started and spreading his message of piety and devotion.

Blessed Hildemar of Arrouaise is commemorated and venerated on January 13th, the day of his feast. While he has yet to be officially canonized, his memory is honored by those who recognize his virtuous life and the sacrifice he made. His story serves as a reminder of the challenges and risks faced by those who dedicate their lives to a higher calling, as well as the enduring power of faith and sanctity. May his example inspire us all to live lives of prayer, service, and unwavering dedication to God.
